Logo design and the Orient
The Far East has always had an exotic appeal to many, especially those who have always yearned to travel the world and learn about different cultures. It has been the source of timeless symbols such as the yin and yang circle and the swastika, a symbol of peace to the Hindu and Buddhist faiths, that was unfortunately tainted by its association with the Nazis during the Second World War. Apart from that, the very nature of the Chinese writing system is beautiful to many and is often used in artwork around the globe. If your company specialises in products from the Orient then they are certainly worth considering for use in your company logo design. There are some Chinese dictionaries containing over 56,000 symbols, although many of those are archaic and not in use today.
Knowledge of around 6000 of them is usually considered enough to read pretty much anything in Mandarin Chinese. Either way, there are many to choose from that not only look beautiful but can be picked to convey a message about your company through their meaning too. Even if you only wish to use them for their visual appeal, it is advisable to check you are not inadvertently writing something negative. Other Eastern languages with beautiful characters include Japanese, which has three types of symbols, one of which, kanji, comes from Chinese characters; and Thai script, from the country of Thailand of course, which although being letters rather than ideographs, are nonetheless pleasing to the eye.
